ANOTHER GAME CHANGING-SEISMIC SHIFT FAVORS THOSE WHO KNOW A BIT FROM A BYTE

As you know, there's a game-changing seismic shift surrounding our children on all sides – "Digital Electronics" is its name, and I'm afraid it's spawning a very specific ignorance of technology.

Absolutely. We use more technology than ever before, but software and hardware companies everywhere have thousands and thousands of good-paying jobs open for programmers and engineers who have real hardware and software skills. They can't find them. Not enough good code cutters and wirers out there. Technical skills are hidden behind closed doors.

In 1979 I wrote my first computer program. It was in BASIC running on a TRS-80. It was fabulous because in 3 lines of code I could make the computer spell out my name in big letters:

10 OK
20 PRINT "RORY WOW!"
30 END

RORY WOW!

Unfortunately, not only are businesses struggling to find qualified employees, schools also have a very difficult time finding teachers who know how to flood kids with computing success.

For years Seymour Papert has been experimenting with tools (turtles) to help kids gain insights into programming. Lego Mindstorms has teamed up with Arduino to create hardware/software programs designed to provide incredible insight into the future. Lego summer camps are a bright spot on the horizon

This Wired article is also very heavy into possibilities.

I also expect it would be very insightful for many of our kids to get a look at HTML. Thanks and keep on programming and wiring,

Rory
